E3 2010: Xbox 360 Slims Down Today
The new Xbox 360 redesign is smaller, quieter, and here now.

At Microsoft's E3 press conference today, Microsoft announced the brand-new Xbox 360 redesign. Smaller and quieter, the new Xbox 360 comes with built-in WiFi and a 250 GB hard drive. The wait for the new Xbox 360 is short, too. Very short. The new Xbox 360 ships today and will be in retail later this week. The machine costs $299, the same price as the existing 250 GB model.

The new Xbox 360 is primarily glossy black. There appears to be more vents on it for heat dispersion. The front of the machine has a sharper indent than the current hourglass design.

As if that was not enough of a surprise, Microsoft also announced that anybody at the theater for the press conference would get their mittens on a new Xbox 360 even sooner: Microsoft is shipping them a new machine immediately. (As you can imagine, the IGN War Room was suddenly full of many frowny-faces.)

Die Gerüchte um eine Xbox 360 Slim scheinen sich zu bewahrheiten: Die Anzeichen verdichten sich, dass Microsoft tatsächlich auf seiner heutigen E3-Pressekonferenz ein solches Xbox-360-Modell enthüllt. Wie diverse Medien berichten, darunter mcvuk.com, ist die Xbox 360 Slim mit einer 250-GB-Festplatte ausgestattet. Nervige Verkabelung im Netzwerk sollen mit der Konsole ebenfalls hinfällig sein. Angeblich integrierte Microsoft einen WiFi-Adapter in die Xbox 360 Slim, der das kabellose Verbinden mit dem Internet gewährleistet. Enthüllt wurde dies in einer Werbeanzeige, ein Preis der Xbox 360 Slim wurde nicht abgebildet. Auch über einen Release-Termin lässt sich gegenwärtig nur spekulieren. E3 2010: Details on the New Xbox 360
Will your old hard drive fit?

The new, slimmer Xbox 360 will be available in stores this week. We've got the full details on all of the console's new features -- and the skinny on what happens to all your older Xbox stuff.

The slim, black X360 comes with a 250 GB removable hard drive. You will need to love it, because your old hard drive won't fit on the smaller system. Neither will your memory cards. That's because the slim doesn't have a slot for memory cards. Instead, it has five USB ports (two in the front, three in the rear). Remember, you can now use a USB flash drive to store up to 16 GB of data.

If you hate noise, this is the X360 for you. Not only does it have a "whisper quiet" disc drive, but the two fans have been turned into one fan for better noise efficiency (AKA quieter). You won't hear the clicky-clack of buttons either. Touch sensitive buttons for the on/off and eject buttons require just a swipe of the finger. Slick. The new system also uses a more efficient power source, so your old power supply won't plug into the back. Don't worry, the Slim comes with a new power cord.

The system offers both an AV port for composite or component connections and an HDMI port. An optical audio jack is also included if you want to connect to a sound system. HDMI and component cables are not included in the Slim X360--just composite cables (for crappy TV viewing).

Any controllers or peripherals you have will work with the new system. There will be some new controllers, headsets, and more designed to match the Slim's hot look if you like to spend money.

The best inclusion with the $299.99 (USD) package is the built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi. Previously, gamers had to spend big bucks for a wireless add-on. This inclusion actually saves you a load of cash, which is kind of nice of Microsoft. Kind of makes up for all those extra consoles we had to purchase after our systems broke.

If you don't own an Xbox 360 or if you want a new one, start harassing your local games store. The Slim Xbox 360 will be in stock any day now.
